Why do they call those beautiful flowers you see at funerals called sympathy flowers?

maybe it is a cultural thing – i have just heard them called flowers – however they are sent in sympathy or honor.

because: I tanned today, and a bee stung me on the bum, and that is why they are called sympathy flowers.
